In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertion that Greenland should fall under American control, Finnish leaders have firmly dismissed the idea. President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen emphasized that any decisions about Greenland’s status are matters for Denmark and Greenland alone.
During discussions at the NATO summit, Stubb underscored that the sovereignty of Greenland is not up for debate by outside nations. Echoing this sentiment, Valtonen expressed Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial integrity, stressing that any territorial claims should not overshadow existing cooperation in Arctic security.
Valtonen highlighted that issues related to Arctic security are better addressed through ongoing defense collaborations. She pointed out that Denmark and the United States are already engaged in discussions about defense, with NATO playing a crucial role in bolstering security measures across the Arctic region.
As a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland’s status has become a focal point of renewed discussions among European allies. Trump’s statements have reignited debates concerning Arctic security, sovereignty, and the stability of the region.
