President Donald Trump has, for the first time, acknowledged the economic strain of his trade war, admitting that the high tariffs imposed on China are “not sustainable.”
This candid admission comes as he confirmed a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in two weeks. “It’s not sustainable,” Trump said, before immediately adding, “But… they forced me to do that.”
This rhetoric suggests the president is feeling the pressure of the trade war, which has seen duties threaten 145% and has sparked fears of a global slowdown.
Trump expressed cautious optimism about the meeting, saying, “I think we’re going to be fine.” But he also warned, “China is always looking for an edge.”
A 90-day truce is set to expire on November 10, adding a hard deadline for the two leaders to find a “fair deal.”
