The United States government has issued $81 billion in tariff refunds to businesses following a Supreme Court decision that found a large portion of the tariffs imposed during former President Donald Trump’s administration were unlawful. This year’s refund amount marks a substantial rise compared to the $5 billion reimbursed during the same timeframe last year. The court’s ruling necessitated the reimbursement of companies that had paid duties in line with these now-invalidated tariffs. According to Treasury budget data, the majority of these refunds were distributed in May and June.
These repayments have significantly impacted the federal budget, contributing to an increased deficit that reached $1.367 trillion over the first nine months of the fiscal year.
