Bank of England Adopts Green Tech Approach, Excludes Coal-Linked Bonds

In a decisive move to tackle climate-related financial risks, the Bank of England will cease accepting bonds from thermal coal companies as collateral for its lending operations starting this October. This step reflects a broader effort to mitigate the financial institution’s exposure to industries contributing to climate change.

Typically, commercial banks, including major lenders, rely on bonds as collateral when borrowing from the central bank to maintain liquidity and facilitate daily transactions. However, under this new policy, bonds associated with thermal coal, the fossil fuel primarily used for electricity generation, will be excluded from eligibility. The Bank of England cites the increasing financial risks faced by companies in the thermal coal sector as nations push toward cleaner energy solutions and aim for net-zero emissions. This shift suggests a potential devaluation of coal-related assets over time.

Furthermore, the Bank of England’s policy allows for the application of discounts on bonds from sectors similarly exposed to climate risks, which aims to safeguard its balance sheet from prospective financial setbacks.
