Rising Oil Prices and Treasury Yields Weigh on US Stock Market

by admin477351

US stocks experienced a decline on Monday as concerns over inflation and borrowing costs heightened, driven by rising oil prices and higher Treasury yields. The S&P 500 dropped by 0.6%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.4%, and the Nasdaq Composite decreased by 0.6%. This downward trend followed a brief surge in Brent crude oil prices, which surpassed $100 a barrel before settling at around $97.61.

Oil prices have been fluctuating amid uncertainty regarding the flow of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, influenced by ongoing conflicts involving Iran. The volatility in energy prices has sparked worries about inflation, particularly as US gasoline prices have seen a significant increase over the past year.

The inflation concerns have led to a rise in Treasury yields, with the 10-year Treasury yield climbing to 5.24% from 5.17%, and the 30-year yield increasing to 5.56%. Higher borrowing costs can exert pressure on businesses and consumers, while also diminishing the attractiveness of stocks and other investments.

Airline stocks, such as American Airlines and United Airlines, were notably affected, recording losses as investors considered the impact of escalating fuel costs. Additionally, gold-related stocks weakened as gold prices saw a sharp decline during the session.
